Sony Says Skip the Alcohol: How to Clean a PS5 Safely

Engadget's guide says a basic PS5 clean needs no teardown, but alcohol and rough handling can damage the console.

Sony Says Skip the Alcohol: How to Clean a PS5 Safely

Owners can give a PlayStation 5 a basic clean without taking the console apart, according to Engadget, though skipping maintenance altogether carries its own risks. Dust trapped inside the machine blocks airflow, which forces the hardware to work harder to stay cool. With console prices rising, a neglected system could leave someone shopping for a replacement.

Engadget warns that cleaning too aggressively is also a hazard. Sony's safety guide advises a gentle wipe of the outer shell using a clean, soft cloth, with no bleach and no chemically treated wipes. The company also cautions against alcohol, which Engadget notes may discolor the casing or break down its materials.

The exterior plastics include ABS, polycarbonate and a PC-ABS blend, and each reacts differently to chemicals, so improvised cleaners are a poor idea. Before any wiping starts, shut the console down, pull every cable and let it cool. Work on a flat, clean surface rather than starting straight after a session.

Most of the first pass targets the vents. A small handheld vacuum or a combination of compressed air and suction will do, but an industrial shop vac is too much. A cotton swab reaches dust the vacuum leaves behind, and a soft brush such as an old toothbrush helps loosen dirt that has hardened.

For anything out of reach, the side covers come off. They are built to be removed but are somewhat fragile, and the method differs between the original PS5 and the Slim or Pro models, so Sony's own instructions are the reference. With the panels aside, the same cloth and handheld vacuum can collect loose dust on both sides. No screws need to come out and the fan stays connected.

Canned air demands care: if the fan spins freely it can generate a charge that harms the console, so Engadget suggests holding the blades still with a cotton swab before blowing. Sony also built triangular dust catcher areas to collect debris for easy removal.

Going further voids protection. Sony's warranty does not cover damage from unauthorized opening or internal work, and reaching the fan screws requires a TR8 Torx Security driver. When finished, refit the covers and the stand before reconnecting cables. Covers that sit poorly can disrupt airflow and may shorten the console's lifespan, so alignment matters. Engadget adds that vertical and horizontal setups are both fine.
