Apple TV Owners Get Years of Updates, but Apple Won't Say How Many
Apple's streaming boxes have received major software updates for up to a decade, though the company makes no promise about future support.

Apple has never committed to a set number of years of software support for its streaming boxes, according to Engadget. The company's past behaviour offers the clearest guide: earlier Apple TV models have kept receiving major updates for eight to 10 years, with security fixes arriving after that.
The newest model, a fourth-generation Apple TV 4K priced at $299, goes on sale November 13. It ships with an A19 chip, a redesigned Siri Remote and microphones that allow hands-free Siri commands. Buyers weighing that price have no official answer on how long the device will stay current.
The record is easy to check. The Apple TV HD arrived in 2015 and the first 4K box in 2017, and both made the jump to tvOS 26 in 2025. Security patches followed in tvOS 26.6 in July 2026, giving the HD roughly ten years of major updates and the original 4K about eight.
That run ended in September 2026 when tvOS 27 arrived. Apple's compatibility list for the new system starts with the 2021 version of the 4K box, so the 2015 and 2017 devices are left out. The company has not said whether those older units will keep receiving security fixes.
Amazon takes a different approach. For Fire TV hardware bought new from Amazon itself, the company commits to a minimum period of security updates, or longer if a published support date for the model falls later. That is not the same as an operating system upgrade, but Fire TV owners at least have a written deadline.
Losing access to the newest tvOS does not turn an Apple TV into a useless box. Netflix still works on the Apple TV HD and the first 4K model even though neither qualifies for tvOS 27. That could shift if developers raise the minimum software their apps require.
Engadget suggests judging the device by how it performs rather than its age. Slow menus, crashing apps or a lost service are reasonable signals to replace it, and security matters more if the box serves as a smart home hub.
Owners of recent models may not need to rush. The Siri AI beta will reach the 2021 4K box and later, provided the home administrator has an Apple Intelligence capable iPhone or iPad. A lost remote also need not mean a new purchase, since an iPhone can stand in, and a replacement Siri Remote costs $59 and works with every 4K model plus the 2015 HD.
